Artist’s statement
New Union Flag re-imagines the Union Jack and celebrates the communities that have contributed to the UK’s cultural legacy. Re-figuring the flag with fabric designs from all over the world, I transform the traditional Union Jack from an archetype of uniformity into a dynamic and celebrational ongoing performance of diversity. Whilst this flag started as a reflection on the UK’s colonial legacy, its design is ever-changing to reflect the ongoing changes of the makeup of this nation.
Since the Covid 19 crisis and as an acknowledgement of the great diversity of National Health Service workers, I have created a face mask with the New Union Flag design, the proceeds of which I donate to the NHS Together Charities trust.
