Paula Billups is an American artist living in New England. Her current practice focuses on collage, installation, publication, performance, and collaboration. She created the Librarian of Babel as a persona in 2015 to direct paper-based collaborations. The character was renamed Head Librarian when The Librarian of Babel became the name for an ad-hoc collective that creates and archives artifacts of microtemporal archaeology, a practice Billups conceived and developed in Berlin in 2013.
She has collaborated with paradigm-bending multinational collectives such as the Cottage University in Ontario, the Artist's Book Exchange at Telavi State University, and the American branch of the Tunisian Collaborative Painters Collective. She completed residencies at the Siena Art Institute in Siena and at the Hohestraße 8 historic house in Quedlinburg, Germany. Her work is in museum, government and university collections in the United States and Europe as well as in private collections worldwide.
Billups holds a BFA from the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in Connecticut and an MFA from the
Transart Institute in Berlin.
